- Goals
The objective of this module is to provide students with:
- overview of Spatial Data Infrastructure;
- methodologies related to SDI users identification and their needs assessment;
- strong knowledge of SDI development fundamentals, and standards;
- skills on SDI data management and SDI technologies deployment.
- Learning Outcomes
After completing this module, students should be able to:
- define SDI components according to its users’ needs;
- organize/supervise the development of SDI;
- take into account and follow SDI standards;
- manipulate related data and use appropriate SDI technologies.

- Contents
- Introduction to SDI concept: brief History, concept definition, definition of related concepts (Geoportal, Metadata, Data standard, Geospatial interoperability, Web service), SDI main characteristics and components.
- SDI Users and their Needs: Identification of Users, Assessment of User needs (User-Needs Assessment Methodologies, User-Needs Assessment Experiences, Changing User Needs).
- SDI Development Fundamentals: Institutional Arrangements (SDI Development Model, Building Partnerships, Authoritative Data Sources), Governance, Organizational Structure, SDI Strategic Framework (Strategic Plan or Roadmap, Implementation Plans).
- Framework Data: Introduction to Framework Data, Defining Framework Data Layers, Creation and Maintenance Approaches, Framework Data Models.
- Standards: The Importance of Standards (Semantics, Syntax, Services, Examples of Standards Adoption), Profiles, Cultural and Linguistic Adaptability, Standards Process (International Standards Development and Review, Standards Introduction and Adoption), Maintenance of Standards, Monitoring Standards Implementation.
- Technologies: Architecture Models (Conceptual Architecture, Operational Architecture, Technical Architecture, Systems Architecture, Examples), SDI Architectural Components, Data Discovery, Visualization and Access (Discovery, Visualization, Access, The Role of Geoportals), Tools (Application Services, Catalogue or Registry Services, Data Services, Portrayal Services, Processing Services).
